The goal when looking for a home remedy is to find one that will treat a condition or ailment naturally and effectively with ingredients often found in our own home. These herbal, plant based remedies have been used for centuries with success and often work.

However, there are some remedies that you might have heard about and should be avoided because they can do more damage than good.

* Liquid Paraffin - This was used to induce vomiting in a child. It can cause severe respiratory damage and stomach problems.

* Butter on a burn - It was thought that butter would help relieve swelling on the skin after a burn. On the contrary, butter used on burns can cause infection.

* Castor oil for constipation - This has often been used as a laxative, however, when used in in excess can damage the intestines

* Herbal Aphrodisiacs - Herbal Aphrodisiacs such as spanish fly are not FDA regulated. There is no way of knowing if you are getting too much of any herb in a supplement. Too much is usually not good and could be harmful to your health.

* Apple Cider Vinegar - Taking vinegar for weight loss can ruin the enamel on your teeth if you do not brush after ingesting it.

* Kerosene - This was used to get rid of head lice. This does not work and is harmful.

* Hydrogen Peroxide - Ineffective used as an antiseptic. This is effective at cleaning wounds, but not killing bacteria in the wounds.

Most home or herbal remedies are harmless, however, if you mix a herb with certain health conditions and prescription medication you might find yourself in the hospital. Always check with your healthcare provider before taking any herbal supplement or home remedy for your ailment.
