Isabel Carter Stewart's return to her native Philadelphia in the seventies was bitter-sweet. She was a graduate student, and her husband, Donald Stewart, was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and they would be living on the city's well-heeled West Side. Once Stewart had moved in, she realized that she had never even so much as set foot in this all-White neighborhood during the forties and fifties when she was growing up. It wasn't until after the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling that Stewart set off for women-only Wellesley College in Massachusetts seeking to "expand her world."
