I read a very interesting article in our local paper today that said the incidence of lung cancer is decreasing faster for men than for women. Why? Because in the last few years men quit smoking in greater numbers than women.
Here is what it said: “Male death rates are dropping about 2% a year while female death rates are holding steady after years of increases.”
While it’s good news that lung cancer death rates are holding steady for women after years of increasing, it’s sad that many of these deaths could have been prevented.
Why are death rates dropping among men while holding steady for women? Here’s the answer as stated in the newspaper article: “Smoking rates fell for men before they did for women, so men reaped the benefits sooner.”
Basically, the number of men who quit smoking rose sooner than the number of women who quit smoking, and so now the number of men dying from lung cancer is declining while the number of women dying has evened off.
So the sooner you stop smoking, the better chance you have of not dying from lung cancer. It does make a difference.
