(April 17, 2008 - Insidermedicine) A new experimental drug has been shown to safely and effectively reduce the symptoms of psoriasis, according to research published in The Lancet.
Here are some facts about psoriasis
• It is a chronic condition characterized by scaling and inflammation of the skin. With plaque psoriasis, patches of itchy or burning red plaques form on the skin.
• Milder forms of psoriasis can be treated at home with remedies that include moisturizers, cortisone creams, and exposure of affected areas to sunlight.
• Seek medical attention for psoriasis if, despite home treatment, you are not comfortable with how your skin looks or feels. A medical professional can confirm the diagnosis and offer stronger treatments.
Investigators from Probity Medical Research in Waterloo randomly assigned over 450 adults with plaque psoriasis affecting at least 10% of their body to receive one of four treatments: The experimental drug known as ISA247 in a low, moderate, or high dose, or a placebo. The participants were followed-up for up to 24 weeks.
After 12 weeks on treatment, the drug improved symptoms of psoriasis, and the benefits increased as its dose increased. Only 16% of those taking the low dose obtained a 75% reduction in their symptoms, based on a standard psoriasis symptom scale, but 25% of those taking the moderate dose, and 47% of those taking the high dose achieved this level of benefit. In contrast, only 4% of those taking a placebo obtained similar results.
Today's research demonstrates the benefits of a novel treatment for severe plaque psoriasis. The relationship between the drug's dose and its benefits means it should be able to be dosed optimally to maximize its desirable effects while minimizing side effects.
