This is a psychiatric anxiety disorder which occurs mainly due to worries and doubts that affect the human brain. Kids suffering from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) are believed to worry a lot. At times, their worry is that something bad might happen to their beloved ones or they get scared thinking something bad might happen to them. Due to this, they always check things twice or thrice or more to be sure about the situation. For instance, some kids are afraid of getting germs and they stay aware all the time. Some other kids will be under worry always, thinking that their parents may fall ill.
The point here is that people who suffer from OCD worry a lot and they spend most of their time worrying even about petty things and double-check things around them. Of course, worrying is not a sin. But, spending an entire life worrying is not the best thing on earth. This is the main problem with OCD patients. OCD is called so because frequent worries are known as obsessions and behaviors of the people to get rid of such thoughts are called as compulsions. Following are some of the common obsessions of an OCD patient.
1. Scared of coming across unlucky words and numbers.
2. Injuries and illnesses (affecting themselves or their beloved ones).
3. Not sure of what they do or committing mistakes.
4. Coming across imperfect things.
5. Germs and dirt.
You can notice the following compulsions (can be referred to as symptoms) performed by a person suffering from OCD.
1. Checking on things again and again. For instance, checking the door locks, gas stoves and so on, repeatedly.
2. Doing the same things repeatedly until it feels perfect. For example, tying a shoe lace over and over until they feel it is done rightly.
3. Cleaning their hands or showering more than thrice a day, thinking that they are unclean.
4. Asking the same questions again and again.
Causes:
OCD is not contagious. So, there’s no need to worry about getting affected if someone in your family or among your friends & neighbors is suffering from OCD. Actually, no one knows a specific cause of OCD. Scientists have studied and conducted researches on it.
Here’s what some experts say:
1- Most kids suffering from OCD would have someone in their family suffering from a similar disease. But, there is not a hook on how OCD is passed from one member to another in a family. The research on this is based on genes. This is because OCD deals with senses.
2- OCD is caused based on the way(s) the mind reacts to a particular problem or event. This depends on the chemicals which carry messages to the nerves in the brain. Once these / certain chemicals get blocked somewhere in their way, the respective patient will not worry anymore.
3- In some rare cases, OCD occurs when the immune system of the body goes down; especially when the immune system stops responding to strep infection. But many people that suffer from strep infections don’t necessarily suffer from OCD.
Statistics:
In the year 1980, it was announced that about 20,000 adults from Baltimore, Durham, Los Angeles, New Haven and St. Louis were suffering from OCD. This was 2.5% of the total population of those regions.
Treatment:
There are several therapies such as cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, medications, psychodynamic psychotherapy that provide treatment for OCD. Among them, psychodynamic psychotherapy helps in managing a few aspects of the disorder. It is not the sole and primary treatment option though. Dr. Joseph Merlino (psychoanalyst), psychiatry adviser to New York Daily News once said that psychoanalysis doesn’t provide much benefit for people who are suffering from OCD. He added that cognitive behavioral therapy and often medication are the preferred treatments for OCD.
“Recently, I worked with an individual who is suffering from OCD and who wasn’t ready to accept either the therapy or the medications. And he still suffers from it. Finally, I referred him to a behavioral therapist considering his future in mind”, said Merlino in an interview. The Expert Consensus recommends cognitive behavioral therapy or behavioral therapy for the treatment of OCD. The technique involved in BT (Behavioral Therapy) / CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is called as ERP - Exposure and Ritual Prevention (this is also referred to as Exposure and Response Prevention).
Medicines, when properly taken, will help in reducing worry and fear. Although medicines are not the only exact solution for OCD. But, there are some rare cases in which only medicines have helped kids to recover from OCD.
BT / CBT works in this way:
The therapist will gather the list of favorite TV shows, activities, hobbies or pets or particular places of the respective child suffering from OCD. After that, the therapist will ask a few questions on a few common problems faced by the child. Then, the therapist uses various ways to stop the child from worrying. And finally, he works out a way to bring the child out of OCD.
