Playing sports is a great way to keeping physically fit and healthy. However, if you don’t have a decent skincare regimen to accompany your leisurely activities, your skin can suffer while doing the things you enjoy the most. With the right products, your skin can stay hydrated and happy, allowing you to stay at the top of your game.

Athletes of all kinds, whether it’s the pros or the softball league at your workplace, have more to worry about than stretching and conditioning. The best way to maintain a truly healthy body is to also maintain truly healthy skin. Outdoor sports such as baseball, softball, basketball and swimming usually involves lots of sweat, oils, dirt and environmental pollutants that can wreak havoc on any complexion. Even indoor activities can pose the same threat to the health of your skin so taking the essential skincare steps can save you a lot of trouble.

Any sport that is played outdoors should always include sunscreen or sun block. No athlete wants to deal with the signs of sun damage on their face, arms and hands as a result of the sport they play. By protecting your face and other parts of the body that are exposed to the sun, you can focus on your game instead of your skin. There are various types of sunscreen that cater to different needs and skin types. There are even sun care products made just for those who are physically active. While many of these products are listed as sweat proof, reapplication is key to maintaining long-lasting protection. If you’re a swimmer, exposure to chlorine in a chemically treated pool can also damage your skin so be sure to use skin care products that are specialized for water sports in order to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized.

Cleansing your face and body immediately after playing a sport is important. This step will keep away dirt, oil, bacteria and other surface debris from collecting in your pores and causing breakouts. Use a body wash or gentle body scrub and facial cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. Never go to bed without washing your entire body first. Stewing in dirt and sweat is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

When outdoors, wear protective clothing whenever possible. This includes hats, caps, and long-sleeved shirts. Loose, lightweight material that absorbs sweat, such as cotton, is perfect for all skin types and allows skin to breathe. Bring a change of dry clothes with you so you can easily switch out sweaty and clingy clothes with fresh ones. Athlete’s Foot is always a concern when it comes to playing sports so be sure to change your socks frequently and wear shoes when stepping foot into a public shower or restroom. Also keep your skin properly hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout your game and moisturize your skin whenever possible to keep the sweat and other elements from causing your skin to become dry and tight.
