You might think that gum problems are something you shouldn't have to worry about until midlife or later, but that's not the case. Gum disease, aka periodontal disease, is a chronic infection caused by bacteria in plaque, the sticky film that constantly forms on teeth. Gums become inflamed (a condition called gingivitis) and can separate from the teeth, forming pocketlike spaces. Bacteria move into the pockets and continue to cause trouble. If you don't get appropriate treatment now, you'll begin to lose your teeth.
