PAPEETE, Tahiti - A plane carrying 20 people crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff Thursday from the French Polynesian island of Moorea, killing at least 14 of those on board, officials said.
Moorea is 10 miles from Tahiti, a South Pacific tourist mecca half way between Sydney and Los Angeles. The plane carried out regular seven-minute flights between the islands for Air Moorea.
French navy ships had recovered some bodies about 1 mile from Moorea airport and outside the island‘s lagoon, and were searching for survivors, although it was feared there were none, a spokeswoman for the civil aviation authority said on condition of anonymity, citing policy.
