A young Chihuahua is on the road to recovery after it was rescued from a group of boys who were kicking it around "like a football".

Third-year graphic design student Shekara Kotze, 20, from Durbanville, said she had come across the grim scene four weeks ago near the Tafelsig Community Centre in Mitchell's Plan, where she was teaching hip hop dance classes.

Kotze, who worked for the Adopt-a-Pet organisation for a few weeks as part of a university project, said she had found the group of about 13 boys, aged 14 and younger, "having a bit of a ball game" with the dog, now nicknamed Ninja.
