The space shuttle Endeavour has re-entered the earth's atmosphere and landed at Cape Canaveral in Florida after completing a 13-day mission to the space station.

The shuttle enjoyed a smooth landing at the Kennedy Space Center despite the adverse weather conditions America is experiencing.

Nasa decided to bring the shuttle in for landing early in the wake of Hurricane Dean, cutting short the trip by one day.

The space center played the Simon and Garfunkel song "Homeward Bound," to wake up the astronauts before they began their journey back.

On landing, mission control welcomed the crew declaring that teacher, Barbara Morgan, had "given a whole new meaning to higher education".

She had been waiting 21 years for the chance to fly into space and answered questions from pupils in Boise, Idaho, while on board.

The seven astronauts had been taking up supplies to the international space station.

Endeavour sustained damage shortly after taking off on August 8 when a piece of foam that broke off the external fuel tank, possibly accompanied by some ice, hit the belly near the landing gear hatch 58 seconds after lift-off, leaving a small gash.
