Heat shields on the US space shuttle Endeavour appear to have been damaged by a piece of ice that hit the craft shortly after lift-off, an American space official has said.

Nasa, the US space agency, said on Friday it was trying to determine the extent of the damage.

"It looks it was an ice impact to me," John Shannon, the mission manager, said after the shuttle docked at the International Space Station (ISS) for an 11-day mission.

The impact left what appears to be a 19 square centimetre gouge near one of the shuttle's landing gears.
