BALTIMORE - The Yankees' 28-game stretch against losing teams continued last night at Camden Yards, but this game didn't have the same feel as some of the slugfests we've seen in recent days.

For one of the few times over the last 2 1/2 weeks, the Yankees faced a legitimate starting pitcher. Jeremy Guthrie, an impressive 28-year-old rookie, held the Bombers in check, leading the Orioles to a 4-2 win in front of a split crowd of 47,952.

Andy Pettitte was far from dominant, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks in seven innings, but the lefthander showed his veteran poise throughout, escaping several jams to keep the game within reach.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, Guthrie (7-3) limited them to two runs over six innings, picking up his first win against the Bombers.

"He's got a lot of confidence right now," Joe Torre said. "He's been doing a lot of good things. We couldn't get the hit we needed to get."

About 30 minutes before Guthrie threw his first pitch, the Yankees took care of some unfinished business, beating Baltimore, 8-7, to complete a June 28 suspended game.

"It was good to get that one over with," Derek Jeter said. "I guess you look at the bright side that we got that win."

Mariano Rivera flirted with disaster in the early game, giving up a run in the ninth and putting runners on the corners, but the closer nailed down the win by getting a forceout at second.

"That was a little more exciting than we wanted it to be, but we won the game," Torre said. "We won one game and lost one game. I'm certainly not satisfied."
