AUSTRALIA has suffered a setback in its under-19 women's basketball world championship campaign in Slovakia, losing 64-57 to Serbia today.

Previously unbeaten Australia, which is nicknamed the Gems, led 35-28 at half-time but couldn't close out the contest in the second half as the Serbs finished atop Group F.

The Gems, who finished second in the group, next face Spain, which finished the classification rounds with a 4-2 in-loss record, in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Australia was undone by poor ball handling against Serbia, committing 26 turnovers to just 10 for its opponent.
