SAN DIEGO -- The Padres broke open a tie game in the bottom of the eighth by plating two runs to upend the Diamondbacks, 3-1, on Wednesday night.
Not only did San Diego win its third consecutive game against the Snakes (74-60), but it is now percentage points ahead of Arizona for first-place in the National League West.
Brian Giles singled to lead off the eighth, and Mike Cameron drove him home on his RBI double. Adrian Gonzalez, the No. 4 batter, brought in Cameron with a single.
This game was tied at 1 until the eighth. Giles drilled a home run in the bottom of the third, marking his 1,000th Major League hit.
It was a pitchers' duel between Arizona's Micah Owings and the Padres' Greg Maddux through seven innings. Maddux and Owings allowed just one run, leaving the game in the hands of the relievers. Each received a no-decision.
Padres rookie reliever Kevin Cameron (2-0) picked up the win. Arizona reliever Doug Slaten (3-2) picked up the loss, while the Padres' Heath Bell got his second save.
