Sergio Garcia absolutely MUST win the British Open this weekend. If he fails, it will be time to seriously question whether the charismatic Spaniard has the right makeup to be a truly elite player in the years ahead.
Garcia has experienced all kinds of trouble in the latter stages of major tournaments. Only a year ago, he was in the final pairing of the British Open with Tiger Woods, yet produced a shaky 73 on a day that yielded a number of rounds in the 60s.
His problem has been converting putts from close range. Well, he's going to face quite a few of them over the next two days, and he certainly needs to make his share.
We've been expecting so much from Garcia since his breakthrough eight years ago at Medinah. We figured he was going to be the one, the rival, for Mr. Woods for the next 15 or 20 years.
