Los Angeles - Disney Studios wants to be the first in Hollywood to ban smoking from its films, industry magazine Broadcasting & Cable reported Wednesday.
'We expect that depictions of cigarette smoking in future Disney- branded films will be non-existent,' Disney chief executive Bob Iger reportedly said in a letter to US Congressman Ed Markey, chairman of the House Telecommunications and Internet Subcommittee.
The productions of Touchstone and Miramax, which are co-owned by Disney, may continue to show smokers, but Iger said DVD copies will carry warnings that the films include smoking.
In May, the powerful Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which regulates film ratings, targeted on-screen smoking.
'In the past, illegal teen smoking has been a factor in the rating of films, alongside other parental concerns such as sex, violence and adult language. Now, all smoking will be considered,' MPAA chief exective Dan Glickman said in a statement at the time.
Films in which there is a lot of smoking will include warnings, like the tags 'glamorized smoking' and 'pervasive smoking.'
