Pop Machine is back from vacation and playing catch-up:
ITEM: “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” the fifth (and grimmest) movie in the series, came out. It made a lot of money. This series must be popular or something.
Alas, repeated viewings give no further clue as to whether Snape is a bad guy.
ITEM: “Captivity,” the kidnap-torture thriller starring Elisha Cuthbert (Jack Bauer’s distress-prone daughter on “24”) came out, and it made very little money: $1.55 million in more than a thousand theaters for the weekend. That landed the film outside the box-office top 10 at No. 12.
The lesson: Just because you’re annoying on “24” doesn’t mean people will pay $10 to see you tortured. Now if she were being chased by a cougar…
