Sun-induced skin may cause damage to the skin and can cause brown colored ‘age-spots’. Prolonged and over exposure of certain parts of body like hands and face puts them at maximum risk. Earlier there used to be no other beneficial and effective remedies for treating with such problems. Cosmetics were the only option available.
Things have changed since then. Certain specific therapies are now available to facilitate with the help in reversing the signs of ‘photo-aging’ at the physiological levels only. Some of the common therapies include physical removal by surgery, microdermabrasion, and chemical peeling. Unfortunately, none of these therapies are gentle and comfortable in application.
Now a day, women generally prefer even gentler approaches and specifically the ‘tropical medications’.”Tropical medications can help up to great extent”, reports the December 2007 issue of the “Harvard Women’s Health Watch”, a publication of the Harvard Medical School.
Various tropical drugs that are under common use for the treatment of ‘age-spots’ work with the process of interruption of formation of ‘Melanin’. This ‘melanin pigment’ is principally responsible for tanning effects on the skin. ‘Harvard Women’s Health Watch’ suggests that you should also apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher value. It also explains some commonly used agents and their impacts.
Hydroquinone
Majority of the Dermatologists consider this cream as the best prescription for treatment of ‘age-spots’. Applying this cream for four to six weeks is enough to watch out the results. An extended application of this cream would definitely bring in greater improvements. This cream is also not free from the side-effects. Most common side-effect is the irritation and reddening.
Recently some of the studies conducted for assessing the impacts of this cream have led to a proposal by the FDA for banning the ‘over-the counter’ preparations containing ‘hydroquinone’. Studies conducted revealed that prolonged application of these drugs may cause cancer. However, the battle of arguments and counter-arguments is still on.
Tretinon
Originally the ‘tropical tretinon’ meant for the treatment of ‘acne’ but further experiments and clinical trials have established that this is also helpful in improving ‘photo-aged skin’. In normal conditions, it may take many months in getting the ‘age-spots’ lighten. Prolonged application of this drug also causes side-effects like redness, scaling, and itchiness. Commonly used brand names include ‘Retina-A’, ‘Renova’, and ‘Avita’.
Adapalene Gel
This drug was also originally developed for the treatment of ‘acne’. Later experimentations have also led to its application and prescription as ‘off-label’ to improve ‘photo-aged skin’.
